This for me has been a foundational practise of mine since before I even began my spiritual journey.
There's just something so deeply freeing about letting everything in your mind spill out onto a page without having to worry if it makes sense, if it’ll hurt anyone or if it's true or not. Just not having to hold onto that to-do list is ecstatic!
It's a safe space for all of your thoughts, worries and desires. A chance for you to be vulnerable in a non-judgmental space that you don’t ever need to reread if you don’t want to. I’ve been journaling since about 2018 and I barely ever reread them! Sometimes I have a nosy, which is liberating as I get to see how far i’ve come on my journey.
The first time you try it, you may notice that you’re a bit tense and your thoughts aren’t really free flowing as you’d like them to be. Many of us grew up in society taught that we had to filter our true thoughts and feelings so be patient and graceful with yourself.
It’s like a muscle, it times time and consistency to grow.
What I found that helped me first get into it was to just look at the keyboard instead of the screen and just type - as if i’m messaging a friend who I trust with every ounce of me, someone I can pour my heart out to.
If you do it online - you can do it somewhere where only you have access to, such as Google Docs or the notes on your phone. If you want, you also can delete it after you're done if you feel the need to.
If you have a diary, just keep it somewhere hidden if you prefer. I’m at a point now where my diary is just next to my bed and if someone chooses to read it, then you’re welcome lol.
The practise gets easier and more profound the more you do it, and you may begin to notice how effective and malleable this technique is. You can use it for emotional and mental release, and you can also use it to track your dreams, to practise gratitude, for your new & full moon rituals and to shape your life in pretty much any way that you desire.
After a while, it becomes second nature for you to turn to your diary most days, if not every day. At some point you’ll begin to notice “damn I feel like I need a good journal” lol.
It’s that easy. If it’s not already, it shall become that easy. It’ll be your cheapest therapist, best friend and mentor all in one.
